Fanta Diamanka (graduate student, African Studies) served as a Wolof language instructor at the Summer Cooperative African Language Institute at Indiana University this summer.
Omolola Anne Famuyiwa (graduate student, Communication and Development Studies) presented "Place on the Edge: Textual Analysis of Online News About Africa" at the Global Fusion Conference in Chicago on September 29, 2006.
Lauri Hlavacs (graduate student, Southeast Asian Studies) has received a research grant from the Center for Southeast Asian Studies. Lauri will be using soft classification of Landsat imagery to detect change and map the progression of destructive fishing practices in the Sabalana Archipelago in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. She attended the Advanced Indonesian Abroad program this summer in Manando, North Sulawesi.
Cheryl King (graduate student, Latin American Studies) traveled to Cuenca, Ecuador to work on her certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language at the Centers for Interamerican Studies.
Loisa Kitakaya (graduate student, Communication and Development Studies) served as a research fellow for FINCA International this summer.
Colleen Klingler (graduate student, African Studies) participated in the Ohio University HIV/AIDS field study in Botswana this summer.
Maureen Magee (graduate student, Communication and Development Studies) participated in the Ohio University HIV/AIDS field study in Botswana this summer.
Zodiac Maslin Hahn (undergraduate student, African Studies) interned for Amnesty International in Washington, D.C. this summer with the support of the Ullman Scholarship from Ohio University.
Mark Mason (graduate student, International Development Studies) traveled to Indonesia this summer to study Indonesian through the United States Indonesia Organization (USINDO).
Thomas Spreelin MacDonald (doctoral student, African Arts) presented "The Aesthetic of Migrationin the Post-Apartheid Era: Phaswane Mpe's" at the 49th annual meeting of the African Studies Association in Berkley in November.
Kara Mealer (undergraduate, Asian Studies) is spending the 2006-07 academic year learning Vietnamese and studying underrepresented populations in Hanoi, Vietnam on a David Boren Fellowship through the National Security Education Program.
