CommDev Workshop, Forum to highlight Media for Social Change
The Communication and Development Studies Program will host a two-day workshop focused on “Media for Social Change” that will explore how community media has been used to promote social change in developing countries. The workshop will look at both academic and practical aspects of community media, coupling scholarly lectures with hands–on workshops and presentations. The two–day workshop will culminate with a hands–on radio transmitter building workshop led by Prometheus Radio Project.
A special two-hour International Studies Forum will kick off the workshop on Friday, April 25 at 3:00pm in Walter Hall 145. This Forum session will feature Clemencia Rodriguez, Associate Professor of Communication at the University of Oklahoma, presenting “The Role of Citizens’ Media in the Context of Armed Conflict: The Colombian Case” and Pete Tridish and John Wenz, both from the Prometheus Radio Project, speaking on “Community Radio for Advocacy and Empowerment: Prometheus in Tanzania.”
Clemencia Rodriguez, a graduate of Ohio University, is a Colombian US-based media and communication scholar recognized for her role in establishing and promoting the field of alternative media studies. She coined the term 'citizens' media' in her 2001 book Fissures in the Mediascape and is co-founder of OURMedia/NUESTROSMedios, a global network of researchers and practitioners of alternative media, community media and citizens' media - currently the largest network of its kind with over 500 members in over 40 countries.
Prometheus is a grassroots organization that works to expand and protect community radio and promote a more democratic media in the United States and around the world by helping community groups build their own radio stations. Prometheus helps civil society groups navigate the radio licensing process and provides technical assistance in building radio stations. They also advocate in Congress and at the FCC to protect community radio and actively participate in the broader campaign for a better media.
