FLAS
Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships
(Application deadline Feb. 1, 2011)

Applications are invited for Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships for graduate and undergraduate studies for the academic year 2012-12. Contingent upon funding by the U.S. Department of Education, the prestigious FLAS Fellowships are awarded to students demonstrating superb academic achievement and a commitment to the study of African languages and area studies. Applicants should be aware that FLAS is awarded competitively and that their statement of purpose should reflect that competition.

Academic year awardees are expected to maintain high academic performance and take full course load (15-18 credits/quarter for graduate and at least 15 credits/quarter for undergraduate) including full-time African language study (3-5 credits/quarter) for each quarter that they receive the award. African language offerings are: Akan, Arabic, Gikuyu, Somali, Sudanese Arabic, Swahili, Tigrinya, Wolof and Zulu. Applicants are encouraged to take African studies related courses and to be involved in Africa related programs.

Fellowships carry a stipend of $15,000 for graduate students and $5,000 for undergraduate students for the academic year. It also cover a tuition and general fees scholarship for graduate students and partial tuition for undergraduate awardees. Students in colleges that assess a technology or other fee will be responsible to pay those fees.

Applications are invited from graduate and undergraduate students currently enrolled in or applying to any department at Ohio University, with the exception of the College of Osteopathic Medicine. Past awards have been made to students of African Studies, Biological Sciences, International Development Studies, Film, Communication and Development Studies, Business, Education, History, Public Administration, Anthropology, Environmental Studies, Public Health and Media Art and Study among others. Potential graduate students are encouraged to apply while also applying to your graduate program. Final awards will be dependent on admission to a graduate or undergraduate program at Ohio University.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Be enrolled in or admitted to an Ohio University graduate or undergraduate program (applications can be submitted prior to admission to the graduate or undergraduate program)
  • Be eligible for an Ohio University tuition scholarship
  • Graduate students should hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent by the beginning of the 2011-12 academic year
  • Undergraduate students can be in any major, but at intermediate or advanced level of language study (freshmen are not eligible)

Application Materials:

  • FLAS application
  • A statement of your career and/or research goals, a description of any previous African language training you have received (formal and informal), and plans for how you intend to use your knowledge of the language proposed for study
  • Three current letters of recommendation from people who can evaluate your academic credentials and ability to learn a foreign language
  • Transcripts from all institutions where you have studied

FLAS for Summer
FLAS Fellowships are also available for summer study. The deadline for summer fellowships is March 1, 2011. Summer Fellowships provide a $2,500 stipend for living expenses and up to $5,000 for tuition. Both domestic and international programs are available.
