FAOs

At the Center for International Studies Foreign Area Officers may earn a Master of Arts degree with a focus in African Studies, Latin American Studies, or Southeast Asian Studies. As a graduate student in one of these programs you will be able to enroll in a wide variety of courses in history, political science, economics and other disciplines. FAOs may continue their language training through courses in French, Spanish, Portuguese, Akan, Amharic, Gikuyu, Pulaar, Somali, Swahili, Sudanese Arabic, Tigrinya, Wolof, Bahasa Indonesia, Khmer, Thai, or Vietnamese.

Schedule

Ohio University is on the quarter system with each quarter being ten weeks. The University observes a six-week winter break during which time students may choose to take courses through the winter intersession. FAOs typically take 4-5 quarters to complete the program.

FAOs at Ohio University

Ohio University is a low-cost school. In the past three years, five FAOs have completed the MA program through the Center for International Studies. The Center staff and faculty appreciate the perspectives the FAOs bring to the programs and will work closely with you throughout the application and admission process. Your program director will serve as your academic advisor, but you will also receive support from the Center staff and other faculty members.

Campus and Community

Ohio University is located in the rolling hills of Southeastern Ohio. The University offers excellent recreational options including an 18 hole golf course, riverside bike path and modern recreation center. The region is known for the Hocking Hills which provide abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation including hiking, canoeing and rock-climbing. Athens is home to an excellent year-round farmers market and boasts a thriving community of local artisans who display and sell their work around the county and beyond.
