Welcome

Welcome to the Center for International Studies’ Website. Our Center hosts a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies degree program in partnership with the College of Arts and Sciences, and it also houses Master of Arts degree programs in African Studies, Communication and Development Studies, International Development Studies, Latin American Studies, and Southeast Asian Studies. All programs and activities of the Center are interdisciplinary; that is, they draw upon courses and faculty in schools and departments scattered across the campus. For this reason, our academic programs take a broad view of the world and of global issues. Our student body represents a diverse cross-section of the world. There are 47 countries represented among the students currently enrolled. Please take the time to browse our Webpages and follow the links to Websites for our academic programs to gain a sense of options we offer.

About the Center:

The Center for International Studies is Ohio University’s gateway to the world, and the world’s window on Ohio University. In 1964 the University established the Center for International Studies with the broad belief that an appreciation of others' values and institutions increases mutual understanding, enriches individual lives, and prepares citizens and students for work in the global environment. The Center embodies Ohio University's commitment to the intellectual and personal development of its students. Its interdisciplinary teaching, research, publications, service, and outreach programs bring together faculty and students from all parts of the University. The Center's African Studies and Southeast Asian Studies Programs are both designated U.S. Department of Education National Resource Centers. The Center's nationally known Research in International Studies Monograph Series (RISMS) publishes scholarly works relating to Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia.

As a degree-granting unit, the Center offers graduate and undergraduate academic programs and supports curriculum development with an international focus. To encourage international understanding and awareness, the Center also houses the Ohio Valley International Council, which brings international programs to educational and community-based organizations and institutions in Southeastern Ohio. With the College of Arts and Sciences, the Center jointly administers a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies (BAIS) degree. The degree program, in which students concentrate on a world region (Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America or Southeast Asia), is designed to prepare students for international careers in law, government, business, education, health, communications, or service. The Center offers an interdisciplinary Master of Arts degree in five academic programs.
